Taxonomy: f. Enteromonadidae
Animal: Enteromonas hominis 6 11.jpg
Sites: Gut
Comment:
Enteromonas hominis trophozoites pear shaped 4 - 10 x 3 - 6 microns in faecal smear stained with Trichrome. N.B. One nucleus and 3 anterior flagella and 1 posterior flagella extending free posteriorly or laterally although difficult to see. One side of body flattened and no cytostome as in C. mesnili. TEM was done to help in the identification (see 12 06, 07). E.hominis is considered to be non-pathogenic and often not recognised so little is known of this organism,; it may be more common than is thought. There were a large number in the faeces of this specimen from a 49 year old male with history of chronic diarrhoea following a trip to India. They were present in all 3 stool samples presented over a 3 week period. Also present were Blastocystis hominis and Enteromonas cysts. No pathogenic organisms were isolated and the cause of his symptoms was not identified, although Blastocystis may have been the cause- its pathogenicity has not been established.
